Her feet discolored, became cold, and she struggled to walk. Doctors found no pulse in the arteries supplying her lower legs and diagnosed her with a rare condition known as \u201choly fire\u201d disease, or gangrenous ergotism.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1763 lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/videoviral2.chainityai.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-3.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/videoviral2.chainityai.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-3.png 512w, https:\/\/videoviral2.chainityai.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-3-240x300.png 240w\" alt=\"\" width=\"597\" height=\"746\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/videoviral2.chainityai.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-3.png 512w, https:\/\/videoviral2.chainityai.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-3-240x300.png 240w\" data-src=\"https:\/\/videoviral2.chainityai.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image-3.png\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Common in the Middle Ages, holy fire was caused by ingesting rye contaminated with a fungus called\u00a0<em>Claviceps purpurea<\/em>. It led to burning pain, numbness, muscle spasms, and gangrene due to restricted blood flow.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, the woman had taken ergotamine for migraines\u2014normally safe\u2014but also took ritonavir for HIV, which blocked the enzyme CYP3A4. This caused dangerous levels of ergotamine to accumulate in her blood.<\/p>\n<p>After stopping ergotamine, her condition improved within two weeks.
